OpenOffice.org 3.0 is available

The new version 3.0 of OpenOffice.org has been released recently. OpenOffice.org is absolutely free alternative to the Microsoft Office software with a Word compatible word processor, Power Point like presentation manager, Excel compatible spreadsheet software and drawing program. It includes features similar to other office suites.
OpenOffice.org 3.0 offers a lot of new features and enhancements, that have been made across the board to its various components. Let 's take a look at some noteworthy features of OpenOffice.org.
The most immediately noticeable modification is the splash screen named the Start Center. It appears when OpenOffice.org 3 starts without a document and without a module. From the Start Center, you can choose which component of OpenOffice.org you want to use.

OpenOffice.org 3 Start Center

OpenOffice.org's word processor called Writer can be used for anything from writing a fast letter to creating an entire book with embedded illustrations, tables of contents, cross-references and indexes. Now working in Writer, you are able to see multiple pages. Notice the two new controls in the status bar (bottom-right-hand corner). The first one is the "View Layout" mode selection, that allows user to switch between a single page, several pages side by side, and book layout. The second control is the zoom slider.

Another interesting improvement of the Writer is so called Notes. It displays notes or comments in a sidebar. Auto-complete, auto-format, and real-time spelling check make easy work of the hardest task.

OpenOffice.org's spreadsheet processor called Calc offers all the tools you need to summarize, calculate, analyze, and present your data in numerical reports or red-hot graphics.
The spreadsheet has been extended to 1024 columns of data compared with the 256 available in previous version of OpenOffice.org software.

You also get such improvements as impacting charts, spreadsheet collaboration and new Solver component that makes calculating dependent spreadsheet cells much easier.

Impress is the powerful tool for creation effective multimedia presentations. Now it has native tables. The new Table Design panel makes it easy to apply colors.

OpenOffice.org 3.0 provides enhanced support for PDF files, letting you better control over security, printing, and editing options. It also works with formats like .docx, .pptx, and .xlsx.
Additionally, OpenOffice.org provides enhanced printing capabilities and options for direct connection with external email programs as well as form-letter management to mail letters to addresses from a database.
OpenOffice.org is available in 27 languages and runs stably and natively on Solaris, Linux, Mac OS and Windows.
Open Office is one of the best alternatives to the MS Office software. Maybe it is not as powerful as Microsoft Office, but it is free. So if you are looking for free alternative to Microsoft Office software, I recommend you to try the latest version of OpenOffice.org, that is available for download here.

I've been using opensource software for almost 3 years already. I find OpenOffice good but its features and use-friendliness are not enough. Plus, there are some bug int it such that I end calling for computer technical help
I hope its developers will come up with a nicer package for OpenOffice

I really love the OpenOffice software. It's so easy for me to use since it looks a lot like Microsoft's stuff, but it's free! :) Anyway, I just did an excel sheet today on it for my company and it worked great. I have also been looking at some software which I will link so I can get your opinion and others: Accounting Software Thanks for the blog! Love it!

Our office just switched to OpenOffice from using Microsoft OS. I admit that I am an avid user of MS Excel and Word which entirely has a big difference - in terms of user-friendliness or was just used in using the latter.

We have our preferences for everything and most people are used to using Microsoft operating system. Other things can be learned including this one. You just have to get used to it.

I agree with you Glydel and I, too is so used with Microsoft OS. The company where I am currently working at just changed and removed all the non-licensed OS and I had to use OpenOffice .org until now. Like you said, maybe it's just a matter of getting used to it.

Maybe the software developers are counting because they have a whopping 2,278 issues targeted for this release. Even though OpenOffice.org 2.4 is not yet out the door, let's see how far they've come with OpenOffice.org 3.0.

OpenOffice 3.0 is a good improvement to OpenOffice 2.0. However, there are still many enhancements that they should make on the office suite program especially on making sure a bug-free software. That's what I keep experiencing with OpenOffice, there are always bugs and so, it keeps crashing from time to time. Quite annoying. PC technical support

I've been using OpenOffice for a while now too, but eventually I caved in and submitted to the convenience that is Microsoft Office.

As a student, I was able to buy MS Office University for just 11% of its regular price, and I simply couldn't say no to an offer like that.

I was having way to much trouble with incompatibilities between OO and MS Office file formats, and with the amount of papers I have to write this semester, it's just not worth the added hassle.

This is a great article and I did not know officespace.org 3.0 did this. I think it is important for people to get trained on computer programs like this because technology is always changing. I would also recommend Microsoft Certs training because it can be useful towards so many business industries.
